BTS Nominated for “Artist of the Year” at the American Music Awards 2024

South Korean supergroup BTS has been named a contender for the top‑tier Artist of the Year prize at this year’s American Music Awards (AMA). The nomination, announced on October 14, places the group alongside global pop icons Bad Bunny, Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga, as well as eight other artists competing in the category.
In addition to Artist of the Year, BTS is also listed for two more categories: Best Male K‑Pop Artist and Song of the Summer. The summer‑song nomination is for their latest single “Swim”, released less than a month before the AMA shortlist was revealed. The rapid recognition underscores BTS’s sustained global impact following their comeback in April with the full‑length album “Arirang” and its title track “Swim.”
BTS’s Recent Chart Success Fuels AMA Momentum
The group’s comeback generated historic chart performance in the United States. On the Billboard 200, Arirang secured the number‑one spot for three consecutive weeks – a first for any Korean artist. Simultaneously, “Swim” entered the Billboard Hot 100’s top‑five and remained there for three weeks, reinforcing BTS’s commercial strength across streaming, sales and radio play.
These metrics align with the AMA’s nomination criteria, which blend streaming counts, album sales and radio airplay. The data-driven approach explains why BTS, despite intense competition, earned placement in three major categories.

Other K‑Pop Acts on the AMA Roster
BTS is not the only Korean act recognized at the AMAs. The global girl group Cats Eye (a joint venture between HYBE and Geffen Records) received three nominations: New Artist of the Year, Breakthrough Pop Artist and Best Music Video for their track “Nali”. Their second mini‑album “Beautiful Chaos” recently peaked at number 4 on the Billboard 200, confirming the rising presence of K‑Pop in the U.S. market.
The Best Male K‑Pop Artist category also lists ATEEZ, ENHYPEN, Stray Kids, and Tomorrow by Tomorrow, while the Best Female K‑Pop Artist slot features aespa, BLACKPINK, Illi, LE SSERAFIM, and TWICE. This broad representation highlights the AMA’s growing acknowledgment of Korean pop music’s influence.
AMA Ceremony Details
The American Music Awards will take place on May 25 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The event will be broadcast live via CBS and Paramount+. Winners will be determined by a combination of streaming data, sales figures and radio spins, ensuring that the awards reflect current consumer trends.

What Lies Ahead for BTS?
With a historic 2021 win as the first Korean act to claim Artist of the Year at the AMAs, BTS’s 2024 nomination rekindles expectations for a possible second triumph. Their recent chart dominance, coupled with a strong fan‑driven streaming base, positions them as a formidable contender against some of the world’s biggest pop stars.
Regardless of the outcome, BTS’s presence on the AMA stage reinforces the group’s role as a bridge between Korean and Western music markets, paving the way for future K‑Pop artists to achieve similar recognition on global platforms.
