GS25’s collaboration with publisher Mineumsa and the IP brand Oneurui Gwiyeoum tucked a literary surprise inside a bread package: a randomly included bookmark. 1 Which book-cover design would you hope to unwrap?
Segye’s August coverage described one transparent bookmark per package, selected randomly from 20 designs based on 15 volumes of world literature and five poetry collections. 1 The designs added cute characters to familiar classic-book covers. 1 These were bookmarks readers could actually use in a book, as Newspim noted in its reporting. 2
What do you choose, and what stays hidden?
The GS25 bread, ZOA keyrings and capsule toys illustrate different ways of buying a surprise: a collectible bundled with food, a collectible inside a blind box, or an item dispensed by a machine. 1 3 4
- Bread with an extra: The Mineumsa collaboration paired bread with a randomly allocated bookmark, so purchasing the package did not mean selecting a particular cover design. 1
- A blind-box collectible: IPX’s ZOA keyring collection was sold in boxes that concealed which keyring was inside until opening. 3 Bizhankook describes the broader random-box format as choosing one of several outwardly identical packages. 4
- A capsule-machine draw: Buyers pay and turn the machine, which dispenses an item inside a capsule. 4
- A ticket-based prize draw: In the format called Ichiban Kuji, buyers purchase a drawing ticket and receive a prize according to the grade drawn. 4
A useful question before purchasing is whether the surprise is an extra accompanying food or the main item you are buying. Treat these reported products as examples to recognize when browsing, rather than a current stock list.
Book covers and miniature outfits
The literary connection has a name: Segye defines “Text Hip” as viewing reading as stylish and as a form of self-expression. 1 GS25 told Newspim that this trend, along with merchandise becoming a reason to purchase a product, informed the collaboration. 2
ZOA offers a different set of visual references. 3 IPX’s “ZOA’S OUTFIT COLLECTION: CROWN EDITION” dresses ZOA, a character based on G-DRAGON’s pet cat, in looks drawn from the artist’s everyday fashion and stage costumes. 3 Its “secret” and “super secret” designs were also hidden on the outer packaging. 3
Together, the bookmarks and keyrings connect the surprise format to specific interests through their designs: literature on one side, an artist’s wardrobe on the other. 1 3
Sharing the reveal
Segye described buyers posting videos of opening their bread packages to discover the enclosed bookmark. 1 Hankyung’s broader account of random merchandise described consumers sharing their acquisitions on social media and exchanging duplicates. 5 The shared moment therefore includes the discovery itself, alongside the object revealed. 1 5
For a US connection, Circana’s Kristen McLean described toys as increasingly functioning as hobbies, fandom ecosystems and social experiences in the company’s August report on the US toy industry. 6
Which detail would speak more to your interests: a classic-book cover with a playful character, or ZOA wearing a miniature G-DRAGON outfit? 1 3
