BTS is Back! A Magical Night with Jimin and the Group at Gwanghwamun Square

Can you believe it? The moment we have all been waiting for has finally arrived! After a long wait of 3 years and 5 months since their ‘Yet To Come in Busan’ stage in October 2022, BTS has officially returned as a full group. I am still buzzing with excitement thinking about the “Return of the King” performance that took place at the heart of Seoul—Gwanghwamun Square!
On the 21st, the square was transformed into a purple sea of ARMYs, with an estimated 100,000 fans attending. The atmosphere was electric, with international fans lining up at coffee shops endorsed by V and the air thick with anticipation for the “BTS Comeback Live: Arirang” show. It wasn’t just a concert; it was a historic cultural event broadcast to 190 countries via Netflix.
The Emotional Return of Jimin and the Members
One of the most touching parts of the night was hearing the members share their honest feelings. Our lovely Jimin opened up about the rollercoaster of emotions he felt leading up to the show. He admitted that while he was incredibly excited, he also felt quite nervous and anxious because he wanted everything to be perfect for the fans.
During the performance, Jimin was visibly moved, telling the crowd, “ARMY, we finally met. I am so overwhelmed and grateful to be able to speak to you here.” He expressed his genuine happiness and gratitude seeing Gwanghwamun Square filled with so many people. It was clear that his focus was entirely on delivering those emotions to us through his performance.

A Masterclass in Stage Design: The “Open Cube”
If you missed the live stream, you have to see the visuals! The stage was a total work of art, directed by the legendary Hamish Hamilton (who has worked with Madonna and Beyoncé) and producer Guy Carrington.
RM explained that they used an “open cube” structure so that the historic Gwanghwamun wouldn’t be hidden. Instead, the palace acted as a stunning backdrop, making the whole performance feel like a living painting. J-Hope described it as if Gwanghwamun was framed inside a picture, with BTS filling that frame with their choreography.
From the drone shots sweeping across the “King’s Road” (from Gyeongbokgung Palace’s Geunjeongmun and Heungryemun to Gwanghwamun) to the ink-wash painting style media facade on the palace walls, every detail was symbolic. They even incorporated the Geon-Gon-Gam-Ri philosophy of the Taegeukgi into the LED art for songs like “Normal,” “Like Animals,” “Swim,” and “FYA.”
The Magic of the ‘Arirang’ Album
Speaking of the music, their 5th studio album Arirang, executive produced by Bang Si-hyuk, is already smashing records! It sold 3.98 million copies on its first day, hitting #1 on the Hanteo Daily Chart and breaking the group’s own all-time first-week sales record in just 24 hours. The title track “Swim” also shot straight to the top of the Melon Top 100 and Bugs real-time charts.
Jimin specifically highlighted the significance of the album’s title, mentioning how wonderful it would be to sing “Arirang” together at Gwanghwamun. That moment actually happened! During the opening track “Body to Body,” the traditional folk song Arirang echoed through the square, performed live by singers and musicians from the National Gugak Center. It was a breathtaking blend of modern K-pop and Korean roots.

Overcoming Challenges for the Perfect Stage
It wasn’t all smooth sailing—the members worked incredibly hard, and some even pushed themselves to the limit. RM unfortunately suffered an ankle injury during rehearsals. While he had to adjust his performance and spent some time rapping while seated during hits like “Butter” and “Mic Drop,” his determination to repay the fans’ wait was inspiring.
As the night ended, the members reflected on their hiatus. Suga shared that they spent their time away contemplating what to protect and what to change, admitting that while they still feel some anxiety, those emotions are a part of who they are now. RM added that the answers they sought were found within themselves, and those honest struggles and wanderings are what make the Arirang album so special.
BTS 2.0 has officially begun, and if this comeback is any indication, the journey ahead is going to be absolutely legendary. I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for everything they have in store for us!
