BTS Ignites Global Stages with ‘Arirang’ World Tour, Dominating Charts and Headlines

Global music sensation BTS has commenced its monumental ‘Arirang’ World Tour, a series of performances that are already leaving an indelible mark on international music scenes and media landscapes. The tour, which began with sold-out shows in South Korea, is set to span 34 cities across North America, Europe, South America, and Asia, with a staggering 85 scheduled performances, marking it as the largest single tour by a Korean artist to date. The scope is expected to expand further with additional dates planned for Japan and the Middle East.
A Triumphant Return and Critical Acclaim
The ‘Arirang’ World Tour kicked off at the Goyang Stadium Main Stadium in South Korea on the 9th, 11th, and 12th, drawing an impressive 132,000 attendees over three days. Tickets for all three dates sold out instantaneously, a testament to the fervent demand from their dedicated fanbase, known as ARMY. Following their South Korean debut, BTS traveled to Japan for highly anticipated performances at the Tokyo Dome on the 17th and 18th. This marked a significant return to Japanese stages for the full group after a seven-year hiatus, a detail prominently highlighted by major Japanese sports newspapers.
Major Japanese dailies, including Nikkan Sports, Sports Nippon, Hochi Shimbun, Sankei Sports, and Daily Sports, dedicated their front pages on the 17th and 18th to BTS’s ‘Arirang’ in Tokyo. The coverage centered on themes of a “complete group return after 7 years,” “Tokyo Dome euphoria,” and “reunion with ARMY.” The overwhelming response from fans was palpable, with convenience stores near the Tokyo Dome reporting a rush of concertgoers seeking to purchase newspapers, leading to early sell-outs. This local fervor is further echoed by the commercial success of their latest album; the Japan Record Association has certified BTS’s fifth studio album, ‘Arirang,’ as ‘Triple Platinum’ for surpassing 750,000 cumulative shipments as of March. The album achieved this milestone just 11 days after its release on the 20th of the previous month, a clear indicator of their enduring popularity in Japan.

International media outlets have also lauded the tour. BBC highlighted the tour as a demonstration of the group’s “beloved status,” noting that “camaraderie was the force that kept the team at the top,” emphasizing the members’ strong bond. NME remarked that BTS is opening a “new chapter” with this tour, suggesting that the performances, much like their new album, are pushing the boundaries of genre and presenting a fresh direction beyond typical K-pop concert expectations. Billboard USA focused on the performance of their hit song ‘Idol,’ where members paraded along the stadium track. The publication described it as a moment that “put BTS’s core narrative back at the center,” showcasing the coexistence of “Korean identity and global pop scale within a single frame.”
Global Box Office Success and Legal Vigilance
Beyond live performances, the ‘Arirang’ World Tour has also achieved significant success in cinematic releases. The live broadcast of the ‘BTS World Tour: Arirang Goyang’ concert, which premiered in Mexico on the 11th, secured the second position at the Mexican box office, earning 48.1 million pesos. Despite being broadcast in the early morning hours in local time, the Goyang stadium concert’s live screening sold out instantly. While the number of screenings and venues were limited, the concert attracted 167,000 viewers. Although this audience number is less than half of the third-ranked film, ‘Drama’ starring Robert Pattinson, the higher ticket prices for the BTS event generated greater revenue. This success in Mexico surpassed even the US box office, where the live broadcast concert ranked fifth, grossing $2.44 million according to Box Office Mojo. Notably, Mexico City is also the city with the highest Spotify listenership for BTS music, with over 700,000 monthly listeners.
Meanwhile, the group’s agency, Big Hit Music, has taken legal action against an X (formerly Twitter) user suspected of leaking parts of the new album ‘Arirang’ online before its official release. Billboard reported on the 13th that the agency filed a summons with a U.S. court requesting information from X to identify the account operator. This legal step is seen as a precursor to potential civil litigation in South Korea against the individual responsible for the leak.

Prior to the world tour, BTS held a comeback show in Gwanghwamun Square in South Korea following the release of their fifth studio album, ‘Arirang,’ on March 20th. The ‘Arirang’ World Tour is an ambitious undertaking, demonstrating BTS’s continued global influence and their commitment to connecting with fans worldwide through both live performances and multimedia experiences. The upcoming live broadcast of the Tokyo Dome concert on the 18th by Mexican cinema chain Cinepolis further highlights the expansive reach of this global event.
