A council working toward carbon-neutral concert and event guidelines launched at South Korea’s National Assembly on September 8, 2026. 1 The Korea Creative Content Agency is beta-testing a concert emissions calculator with HYBE, SM and JYP, focusing on venues in Seoul and Incheon, with the aim of informing future guidelines. 12 These announcements describe measurement and policy development; they do not establish a completed standard or demonstrate emissions reductions from the pilots. 12
For a US fan comparing concert climate claims, the useful starting question is: does the calculation include your trip and hotel stay?
What the percentages actually measure
Asia Economy reports that YG’s BLACKPINK Goyang concert assessment calculated emissions of 15,115 metric tons, with audience travel and accommodation accounting for 99.56% of that total. 3 That percentage describes the composition of the assessed emissions, rather than a reduction against an earlier concert or tour. 3
The same report describes Coldplay’s announced 59% reduction in emissions per show for its 2022–2023 tour compared with 2016–2017. 3 That calculation covered concert production, logistics, and band and crew travel, while excluding audience round trips to the venue. 3
The figures therefore answer different questions: BLACKPINK’s percentage identifies a share of an assessed total, while Coldplay’s measures a change in emissions per show against an earlier tour period. 3 Their different boundaries and denominators prevent a direct ranking of the acts’ environmental performance, and the Goyang assessment does not establish an audience-travel percentage for K-pop concerts generally. 3
A calculator still needs usable inputs
Consultant Cho Hyo-jin reported that participation in a voluntary audience travel calculator remained below 10% because accessing ticketing and organizer communication channels was difficult. 4 She also described difficulty obtaining supplier and venue data where there was no obligation to provide it. 4 These examples distinguish a tool’s ability to calculate emissions from organizers’ ability to collect the information it needs. 4
Asia Economy also reports Cho’s example of production materials whose weight and material type could not be confirmed, leading to emissions estimates based on purchase prices. 3 Under that approach, more expensive environmentally preferable materials could appear to increase emissions in the calculation. 3 A reported increase could consequently reflect the price-based estimation method rather than establish that the material choice caused higher emissions. 3
Use these editorial questions when evaluating a claim:
- Does the stated scope include audience travel and hotel stays, or only production and touring operations? 3
- Is the headline number an emissions total, a share of that total, or a reduction per show? 3
- For a reduction, what baseline period and activities are being compared? 3
- How much audience participation informed the calculation, and what supplier or venue information was unavailable? 4
- Were material quantities and types established, or were emissions estimated from spending? 3
What happens next
The council plans to discuss concert energy and transportation in November 2026, waste reduction in December, and incentives in January 2027, followed by a proposed direction for guidelines in February. 1 February is a planned policy-development milestone, not a confirmed implementation date. 1 The culture ministry separately plans to review guidelines with the industry in 2027; the announcement establishes no requirements for US concerts. 1
